Ethiopia 2013

Sauder Arc Initiative

Iris Lo

Arc Initiative and Ethiopia

The Arc Initiative was formed in March 2010 with the vision of building a bridge between the Sauder School of Business at UBC and the South African community of Phalaborwa. During the summer of 2010, a team of twelve students, alumni, faculty and business professionals shared stories, ideas and business knowledge with the people of Phalaborwa. Aklilu Mulat, CEO of HOPE International Development Agency and a proud Ethiopian, was part of the founding team. He left Phalaborwa with the burning desire to bring the Arc Initiative to Ethiopia.

His dream was realized when the first chapter of Arc Ethiopia took place during the summer of 2011. This included a one week business skills workshop and student internships. The interactive business skills workshop was held at the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa and was attended by 70 Ethiopian entrepreneurs. The program expanded in 2012, offering a Level I workshop to 70 entrepreneurs and a Level II skills workshop to 30 entrepreneurs in Addis.

What will we do in 2013?

The Arc Initiative will expand on the program offered in 2012, building upon both the business management skills and leadership capacity developed last year. Activities include:

  • A one week business tools and leadership workshop: Presented by Sauder faculty, alumni and business professionals during July.
  • Four-week internships and service learning for UBC Sauder students in local businesses/organizations in Addis Ababa.
  • A business ideas generation event known as the “An Innovation Challenge”.

Students selected will be part of the Arc Initiative team from the date of selection through to December 2013.
